올 2월 미얀마의 군부 쿠테타로 시발된 미얀마의 민주화 투쟁이 수백명의 희생자를 낸 가운데 여전히 계속되고 있다.

「광주전남 작가회의」는 마얀마의 민주화 투쟁을 지지하고 함께 참여한다는 의미에서 <광주in> 등에 릴레이로 시를 기고하고 있다.

28번째 민주화연대투쟁 시로서 본지 이미루 편집국장(이하 시인)의 시가 게재되었다. 시 제목은 ‘Imagine, 미얀마를 위하여’인데 이는 베트남전쟁 때 평화를 노래했던 ‘존 레논’의 노래 제목 ‘Imagine’에서 착안 된 것이다.

이 시인은 “이 노래는 크메르(현 캄보디아) 내전을 다룬 영화 ‘킬링필드’의 ‘엔딩 크레딧’을 장식한 노래이며 크메르와 미얀마의 동질적 비극이 떠오르면서 시의 중심축으로 삼게 되었다”고 말했다.

또한 “광주 5.18과 너무 닮은 사건에 소름이 돋아 매우 우울했는데 「광주전남 작가회의」에서 이 행사를 주관하게 되어 미력하나마 미얀마의 민주화를 지지하고 작은 힘을 싣고자 참여하게 되었다. 하루빨리 군부가 물러가고 민주가 승리하기를 기도한다.”고 밝혔다.

이 시인의 시는 영어로 번역되어 한글과 동시에 실렸는데 이는 다른 나라 사람들에게 미얀마 쿠테타의 참상을 적극적으로 알리고 미얀마 민주화 투쟁에 함께 힘을 모아주길 바라는 마음으로 이루어진 것이다. 번역은 재미 영문학도 Lydia Im의 작품이다.

참혹한 일들은 없었다고 너는

혀를 잘라 혈서를 썼지

쿵쿵 뛰는 심장 꺼내 보였지

붉은 장미 마구 피어 낭자한

겁 없는 5월이었지

우리는 기억을 버려갔고

망월동의 2월은 화창한 듯 음산했지

그때 너,

벼락처럼 나타났지 군화를 신고

만달레이 2월 달력에 광주를 걸었지

Everything will be O.K.

미소 짓는 ‘치알 신’의 티셔츠에

선홍빛 꽃물이 스며들었지

팬의 총탄에 쓰러진 레논처럼

믿었던 총칼에 쓰러져버렸지

금남로 분수대 앞

산화한 5월의 꽃잎 같은

다웨이·만달레이·몰먀잉·모니와·메르귀·미치나·양곤...

“Imagine all the people

living life in peace.”

노래했던 우리들은 지금 어디에 있는가

19세 소녀 ‘에인절’은 어디에 있는가

미얀마여!

미얀마여!

“Nothing to kill or die for,”

John Lennon’s song was sung.

Claiming no brutality,

You wrote in blood with a severed tongue.

You pulled out and arrayed a beating heart.

Dripping with blood, red roses bloomed – recklessly.

It was an audacious May.2

The February of Mangwol-dong,3 bright yet so dreary,

We have been forsaking memories.

At that juncture,

You appeared like lightning, wearing military boots.

You calendared Gwangju4 on the February of Mandalay.5

‘Everything will be O.K.’

Said the t-shirt worn by a smiling ‘Kyal Sin,’6

The reddish-pink flower stain permeated.

Like John Lennon who was gunned down by a fan,

You were gunned down by the trusted force of arms.

Like the consecrated blood petals of May,

In front of the fountain of Geumnam-ro7 are

“Dawei, Mandalay, Mawlamyine, Monywa, Mergui, Myitkyina, and Yangon . . .”.8

Where have we gone who used to sing,

“Imagine all the people

Living life in peace.”?

Where is the 19-year-old ‘Angel’?

Myanmar!

Myanmar!

Burn as eternal candlelight!
